Need Participants for
American Cancer Society Research Study
My name is Alex Toomey
and Sarah Downs gave me your contact info. I am a staff
partner with the
American Cancer Society in charge of various Relay
For Life events around the Columbus area. I wanted to reach
out to you today about an exciting opportunity that area
residents have to participate in cancer research first hand.
Two area Relay For Life events will be hosting Cancer
Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) host sites this year:
-Relay
For Life of
Grove City - June 19th - Enrollment hours: 6 pm - 10
pm
-Relay For Life of
Westerville - June 26th - Enrollment hours: 6:30 pm - 10:30
pm
The American Cancer
Society’s Department of Epidemiology and Surveillance
Research is inviting men and women between the ages of 30
and 65 years who have no personal history of cancer to join
a historic research study. The ultimate goal is to enroll
500,000 adults from various racial/ethnic backgrounds from
across the U.S. The purpose of CPS-3 is to better understand
the lifestyle, behavioral, environmental and genetic factors
that cause or prevent cancer and to ultimately eliminate
cancer as a major health problem for this and future
generations.
This is a way for
individuals to give back without having to spend a dime.
All they would have to do is come to one of the
aforementioned events during the appropriate hours, fill out
a survey, get a waist measurement, and provide a small blood
sample (this last part is done by licensed phlebotomists in
case anyone asks). Health
Departments around the state have been getting behind
this influential research which is why I am contacting you
today. Any assistance you could provide in helping us get
more participants would be of the utmost value whether this
be simply making information about the study available or
allowing me to speak to your co-workers and/or constituents.

NRTA,
has declared May
14th
as “Community Participation Day”. As in the past,
FCRTA
is suggesting your donation of ‘gently used’
clothing for the needy to the “Free Stores” in our community. “The Shepherd’s
Place”, 1729 Brice Rd. is one. (Donations are accepted Mon., 10 to 7, and Sat.,
10 to 12).
Another suggestion is “Veteran’s Free Store” on W. Broad. They
also accept small household items.
Non-perishable food items to the
Mid-Ohio Food Bank
are also requested. Robert Croye has graciously
volunteered to deliver our food donations to the food bank if we bring them to
our luncheons and deposit them in the ‘donated food’ container at the hostess
table. Please, let’s all bring at least one food item to each luncheon. THANKS!

ColumbusReads is a tutoring and mentoring program for
Kindergarten students in the Columbus City Schools. The program aims to
improve the reading readiness skills of Columbus' youngest students, to
prepare them for the first grade and to initiate a process that enables them
to read on grade level and eventually to pass the reading portion of the
Ohio Proficiency Test. If you can give one hour a week to support our
young children please give Virgie Homeny, ColumbusReads Supervisor, a call
at 365-5253 or email at

Three opportunities to help… and to earn volunteer hours.
Thanks to you
who brought cans of food to our last luncheon for the
Mid-Ohio Food Bank. Robert
Croye reports that 70 pounds of food donations have been turned in to date. We’re told
that every can matters. Let’s continue this throughout the year at each
gathering.
A new Veterans’ Free Store
has opened at 1295 W. Broad St. This store provides various services as
well as clothing and household items for needy veterans. We can help by bringing
our donations to the store. To learn more about

Thanks to one of our trustees, Robert Croye,
for volunteering to transport our donations of food, clothing and other items to
their designated places. And don’t forget to give yourself some volunteer
hours for your donations!

NPAC
Help preserve a part of
Columbus history. Help restore the old Northland Cinema Theatre on Morse Rd.
into a community arts center. The theatre had been prepared to be razed
along with the rest of Northland Mall, when Vaud-Villities Productions got word,
purchased it and renamed it Northland Park Arts Center (NPAC). It has come a
long way from it's devastative state, but has a way to go before it can be
utilized by other arts groups.
Enjoy hands-on projects:
painting, building, electrical, artistic, organizing and more. Enjoy a bit of
nostalgia while working along with Vaud-Villities cast members.
Or, you may enjoy working on
stage props, costumes, etc. to prepare for the spring show. Work along with the
singers and dancers behind the scenes to make the show happen.

Volunteer hours...
Fellow members,
In December, ORTA will be asking for the number
of hours and the organizations for which you volunteered;
such as church, schools, Northland Park Arts Center, Charity Newsies, etc.
It is for the entire year, Jan. thru Dec. of 2009. This year, let’s hear from every FCRTA member! Small numbers of
hours count, too!
One more volunteer suggestion is to bring a
friend or relative who may enjoy getting out of the house for a good lunch and
entertainment as a guest to the December luncheon. Hours for this gesture
would begin with the time you pick up your guest to the time you deliver him or
her to their home. (Remember to include your donation of clothing to the Good
Shepherd Free Store)
